The OTA Platform Guidelines For Disputing Reviews

This indicates the review was made without an actual experience at your property.
A timely cancellation may justify a removal request as the guest's review might not reflect a genuine stay.
If the review doesn’t provide meaningful feedback about an experience, you may challenge it.
This scenario might warrant a removal since the guest didn’t have a proper stay.
If it's clear the review is for another property, you can request its removal.
When a review is used as leverage and you have written proof, removal may be considered.
Note: Even if a review is removed, its score might still factor into your overall rating.
Consider these points before disputing:
Follow these simple steps:
Expedia uses various tools to monitor reviews. However, negative feedback or claims alone aren’t enough for removal. For example, if a guest complains about a hotel restaurant’s food—even if the language is strong—the review will remain because it reflects their experience.
Remember, if a guest actually attempts or completes their stay, their review stays online.
Expedia will consider removal only in limited cases. Click below to see examples:
Reviews showing personal staff details, evidence of violence, child abuse, serious injury or death, discriminatory language, or inappropriate images (e.g. nudity) qualify for removal.
If a review is mistakenly posted for the wrong location or is duplicated, you may request its removal.
For example, if a review leaves a positive comment but assigns a 1-star rating, this discrepancy might be grounds for disputing the review.
If you can provide proof that the guest never arrived or the review is fraudulent, coerced, or fake, removal may be possible.
Once you determine the review may qualify for removal, follow these steps:
Google reviews can be removed when they violate specific content policies. Click on each item below to learn more:
The review doesn’t pertain to an experience at or with the business.
The review is from a bot, a fake account, or contains ads and promotions.
The review is from someone affiliated with the business or a competitor’s business.
The review contains swear words, sexually explicit language, or details graphic violence or other illegal activities.
The review personally attacks a specific individual.
The review contains harmful language about an individual or group based on their identity.
The review includes personal details such as an address or phone number.
To report a review on Google, follow these steps:
Google will review your report and determine if the review violates its policies.
Click on each item to learn more about when you can dispute a review on Tripadvisor:
The review appears on a listing that doesn’t match the business the reviewer experienced.
The content may be deemed unsuitable or offensive for general audiences.
Reviews from former staff or competitors can be biased and may be disputed.
Outdated reviews may not reflect the current quality or service of the business.
A mismatch between the written review and the star rating can be grounds for dispute.
If there is evidence that the reviewer never visited or used your service, removal may be justified.
Multiple reviews for the same experience by one person are not allowed.
Reviews that serve as advertisements or promotions rather than honest feedback can be removed.
If the experience has been sufficiently covered, duplicate reviews may be redundant.
Personal disagreement is not typically enough, but if there is verifiable misinformation, it can be challenged.
Any review revealing personal or sensitive details may be subject to removal.
Content that violates laws or promotes illegal activities is not permitted.
If none of the above categories apply, you may still have grounds for reporting the review.
Review Guidelines
In addition to our general community guidelines, we have specific posting guidelines for reviews. Reviews are posted to a property’s listing page and are associated with a bubble rating between 1 and 5. Ratings selected may have an impact on the property’s position in Tripadvisor’s popularity rankings and/or how a property appears on our platform.
Second-Hand Experiences
A review on Tripadvisor should be an honest account of a traveler’s personal experience at or with a property that is listed on our site. As reviews are associated with a bubble rating and impact a business’s position within Tripadvisor’s popularity ranking, they should include relevant, helpful tips for other travelers and members of our community and must be based on a first-hand experience. Each user must have their own account and may not write on behalf of others unless writing about the experience of someone in your traveling party. If you did not experience the business as a guest or potential guest, we will not post your review.
Exceptions for Serious Safety Incidents
To ensure travelers are aware of serious safety incidents, exceptions include reviews written by a family member in the event of a death or by a parent/guardian for minors involved in serious safety incidents.
Second-Hand Information
Reviews should reflect your own experience. We remove reviews that contain quotes or descriptions from third parties, media excerpts, or any information not directly experienced by you. Exceptions include information communicated directly by a business staff member or from your travel party.
Irrelevant to Trip Experiences
Reviews are not the place for political, ethical, or religious debates unless directly relevant to your travel experience. Comments on local customs or safety issues are acceptable if they relate directly to your experience.
Review Length and Ratings
Reviews must be detailed and provide travel guidance. We enforce character limits and minimum requirements depending on the type of business. The bubble rating reflects your overall experience.
Irrelevant Content
Reviews solely on business policies, media coverage, or unsuccessful contact attempts will be removed. The focus must remain on your actual experience.
Unique & Recent Experiences
Reviews must be submitted within one year of your experience. Duplicate reviews or reviews covering the same experience across multiple listings will be consolidated.
Bias & Attempts to Manipulate Rankings
Reviews must be unbiased and from genuine travelers. Reviews from property affiliates, competitors, or those attempting to manipulate rankings will be penalized.
Restrictions
Properties may not discourage negative reviews contractually. Any attempt at coercion, review bombing, or manipulation of ratings is strictly prohibited.
